Neuropsychology: understanding assessment and cognitive functioning
The scientific foundations of neuropsychology
Neuropsychology, as a discipline located at the convergence of neurology and psychology, represents a science dedicated to the study of the correlation between the brain and human behavior. The discipline takes a close look at normal and abnormal brain functionnig, exploring the role of different brain structures in processes such as the acquisition of new knowledge or the recognition of objects in the environment.
To better understand the link between these brain functions and the behaviours that result from them, a neuropsychological evaluation provides a detailed analysis of a person's cognitive, emotional and behavioral abilities. This measurement tool is at the heart of clinical neuropsychological practice, helping to identify the strengths, difficulties and specific needs of each individual.
Clinical applications of neuropsychology for patients
As a clinical discipline, neuropsychology mobilizes knowledge from the fields of psychology and neuroscience to help people with developmental, acquired or degenerative neurological disorders. This assistance takes the form of detailed assessments or neuropsychological interventions, aimed at better understanding and mitigating the impact of these disorders on the daily lives of the individuals concerned within our neuropsychology clinic.

What is a clinical neuropsychological assessment?
Neuropsychological assessment is an essential process that enables us to better understand the functioning of our brain and its impact on our daily lives. Imagine the brain as a team of players in a soccer match, where each player represents an essential function such as memory, attention, planning, perception, verbal communication, reading and writing. This in-depth examination is not limited to these cognitive aspects, but also explores the emotional dimensions, looking for signs of anxiety, sadness, anger or self-esteem problems, among others. The neuropsychologist acts a bit like the coach who analyzes his team's strengths and weaknesses, and then draws up a game plan for success.
What is the purpose of a clinical neuropsychological assessment?
The main aim of this assessment is to highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of the person being assessed, whether child, teenager or adult. In short, it's like putting together a complete portrait of a person from different jigsaw puzzles, each piece being an element of his or her mental and emotional functioning. This overall picture enables neuropsychological experts, such as those at CERC, to make a diagnosis when necessary. We offer two types of neuropsychological assessment at CERC:
What training do neuropsychologists receive?
Neuropsychologists have undergraduate training in psychology, followed by post-graduate training (master's and/or doctorate) in neuropsychology. Neuropsychologists are members of the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec (OPQ), which verifies their qualifications and insures quality of practice.
Trainees and interns are neuropsychology students at the end of their studies. Their work is personally supervised by Dr Benoît Hammarrenger, neuropsychologist and director of CERC. All CERC neuropsychologists and psychotechnicians have been scrupulously selected and trained by Dr. Benoît Hammarrenger, who ensures consistency of service and quality of professional practice. Our team is our pride and joy, making CERC an exceptional neuropsychological clinic.
Are the costs of the assessment covered by my insurance?
The cost of sessions with a neuropsychologist is covered by your insurance, just like sessions with a psychologist. In many cases, the out-of-pocket expenses are minimal. If you have any questions, contact our neuropsychological clinics in Montreal, Laval and Brossard.
