What is a neuropsychological evaluation?
A neuropsychological assessment is a diagnostic process that covers all the functions handled by the brain (memory, attention, organization/planning, perception, oral expression, reading, writing). The psycho-affective state can also be assessed, to highlight the presence of anxiety, sadness, anger or loss of self-esteem, for example.
The aim of the assessment is to highlight both the child's strengths and difficulties. The profile thus established by all the tests enables CERC neuropsychologists to make a diagnosis when appropriate.
Why a neuropsychological diagnosis?
Above all, it's not a matter of simply sticking a label on the child and pointing out his or her difference for all to see. Neuropsychological diagnosis is just the first step towards intervention. Once we understand why a child has difficulty learning, difficulty concentrating, why a child objects to rules and requests, and even why a child is sad or anxious, we know what specific interventions are needed to help that young person and his or her family. Neuropsychological diagnosis enables us to target interventions and work effectively with the child or adolescent.
Following the assessment, you will receive a highly detailed report, illustrated with graphs clearly showing the child's strengths and weaknesses. This report becomes a tool for you thanks to the many recommendations, which can be addressed to parents, teachers, other professionals offering support to the child or the attending physician. The recommendations in the report enable you, as a parent, to meet with school staff to formulate the right accommodation and support requests for your youngster. You'll also benefit from CERC's excellent reputation with schools, who usually receive our neuropsychological evaluation reports with openness, so that they too can use them as a working tool.
Finally, as a parent, you'll be able to better understand your youngster, how he or she functions, what difficulties he or she is experiencing, and how to separate what is out of his or her control from what belongs to his or her motivation and good will. You'll know better how to deal with his / her difficulties on a daily basis, and you'll feel better equipped and more effective in your role as a parent.
In that sense, sometimesneuropsychological evaluation is the key to your young person's success!

How does a
neuropsychological assessment with a child work?
For children under the age of eight, the neuropsychological evaluation takes place over two half-days, i.e., two sessions of two-and-a-half to three hours each. For children aged eight and over, and for adolescents, the assessment usually takes place over the course of a full day, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 or 4:00 p.m., with a lunch hour between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. This seems to us to be the best way of really observing attention and the degree of fatigability in a context of intellectual work. In terms of concentration effort, our assessment day is the equivalent of a school day. Thanks to our half-day or full-day assessments, the accuracy of our diagnoses of attention and concentration is greatly enhanced.
During the neuropsychological evaluation, we present the child with various tasks that measure different brain functions (intelligence, attention/concentration, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, planning, reading, writing). All our tests are standardized, i.e. they have been administered to hundreds of children and adolescents, enabling us to compare the results we obtain with expected averages for a given age.
Following the assessment, we draw up a detailed report, which we will be able to give you two to four weeks after the assessment. During this session, the results will be clearly explained to you, and recommendations to help you or your child will be provided. We'll take the time to answer any questions you may have. It's important to us that you leave equipped for what comes next!
